He was born to Francis and Monica Burns. He grew up in Tecumseh and graduate from Tecumseh High in 1953. Attended Peru State College and served in the US Navy 1957- 1959. United in marriage to Shirley A. Gerdes on August 12, 1961. Together they had 3 children: Kelly (Erik) Nankivil of Owatonna, MN., John Tyler (Christine) Burns of Spring, TX; Angela (Robert) Bars of Houston, TX. He is survived by them as well as 9 grandchildren, 4 brothers, their wives, and numerous nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his parents, sister Frannie and nephews and nieces.
