Shirley Ruth (Callen) Young, 83, of Allegheny Township, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, following a long struggle with dementia.

She was born Dec. 22, 1934, in Butler, to the late Donald R. and Ethel M. (Rumbaugh) Callen.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert F. Young, in 2009; and an infant son, Robert Kevin Young.

She graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in education but spent her life as a homemaker serving her family, her church and her community.

Through the years, her service included fostering and adopting children and helping to sponsor refugee families.

She was a former member of the Junior Women's Club; started and administrated a nonprofit called Hire-A-Teen; was on the board of Habitat for Humanity; was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels; was a volunteer for Tri-City Life; ran her own business, Young's Garden Pottery, which included floral design and wedding florals; and taught craft classes.

As a member of Pine Run Presbyterian Church in Markle, she taught Sunday school, was a youth group leader, was a member of the session and women's fellowship, and initiated the annual Pine Run Craft Festival, which is still ongoing after more than 25 years.

As a member of Lower Burrell Baptist Church, she helped with Vacation Bible School, helped administrate a monthly food pantry in connection with the Westmoreland County Food Bank and ran a monthly senior gathering.

She is survived by her children, her grandchildren, her brother and sister-in-law, her brother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, many nieces and nephews; and her special neighborsr.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Pine Run Presbyterian Church in Markle, 1117 White Cloud Road, Apollo, PA.

Burial will be at Butler County Memorial Park in Butler.
