Born Sept. 10, 1924, in Sibley, he lived his lifetime in the Sibley and Gibson City area and worked at M & W Gear until retiring. Merton was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sibley. His enjoyment was spending time with his family. He was a very avid Cubs and Bears fan. He was treasurer for Sibley Lions Club for many years.
Survivors include stepchildren, Beverly Fretty, Wanetta Tomczak, Sharon Tasker, Gerald (Lena) Kestner, George (Becky) Kestner, Ronald (Phyllis) Kestner; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Merton was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; parents, George and Hilda Branz; one sister, Pauline; three brothers, Orvin, Lyle and Burl; and several grandchildren.
Cremation rites have been given. Interment will be at 11 a.m. June 23 at Mount Hope Cemetery, Sibley, followed by a memorial service at Telecare, 215 E. Third St., Gibson City.
The family thanks Heritage Health nursing home for the care all employees gave to him.
