OBITUARY, The San Diego Union-Tribute. March 16, 2004.

"Robert D. Potwin "Bob" and his wife, Helen Sutherland Potwin, passed away in their San Marcos home, January 4 and February 27, 2004, respectively. Together for 62 years, both were 85 years of age.

The couple made many friends in San Marcos since their retirement here in 1984.

Married in June 1942, Bob and Helen met when students at the University of Oregon, Eugene, where Bob graduated from the School of Journalism. [Helen graduated May 29, 1943 from Oregon State College with a Bachelors of Science, School of Home Economics, degree. Graduation Program, p. 20]

A widely known journalist for 20 years, Bob served with the Oregon Journal, Santa Monica Evening Outlook and the Los Angeles Times.

Because of his considerable knowledge of the Santa Monica Bay area and wide acquaintance throughout the community, in 1962, Bob was appointed deputy to Supervisor Burton W. Chace of the Fourth District. Following the death of Supervisor Chace, he was named field deputy of Los Angeles District Attorney Joseph P. Busch until he retired.

Helen, too, enjoyed an actively productive life. Assisting major charities, she was a member and sometime president of Keys, a principal fundraiser organization for the Santa Monica Hospital Clinic. Founded by 14 young Santa Monica women in 1954, Keys was formed to establish a worthwhile philanthropy. Successful from its start, in addition to fundraising, members served as volunteers, contributed Christmas gifts to children patients and food orders for needy families at Thanksgiving.

The Potwins were members of San Marcos' Meadowlark Church.

Arrangements are being handled by Simple Tribute.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 23, at 1 p.m. at the church, which is located at 1918 Redwing Street.

Survivors include Bob's sister, Inez Potwin of Redmond, Washington."
