Charles' niece Marion Bauchop (1912 - 2006) remembered that Charles got married late in life. His wife was "very religious" and was somehow related to Cardinal Dougherty and he converted to Catholicism when he married her. Cousin Bert J. Johnson (1937 - 2015) explained the connection. Cardinal Dennis Joseph Dougherty's sister Catherine married a Patrick McCormick. This couple had a son J. Carroll McCormick who became a Catholic bishop in Philadelphia. The couple also had a daughter Mary who married Charles M. Kiehl. So Bishop J. Carroll McCormick was Mary's brother and Cardinal Dennis Joseph Dougherty was Mary's uncle.
