Civil War
Asst. Surgeon, 1st Regiment, Maryland Eastern Shore Infantry
Surgeon, Eleventh Maryland Infantry

Obituary - Maryland Independent (Port Tobacco, Maryland), February 25, 1916:
DR. J. M. KEMP.
The death list continues and since our last issue another good citizen has answered the summons of the Most High when Dr. J.M. Kemp, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Saturday last from heart disease.
Dr. Kemp came to this county several years ago from Virginia and purchased the "Poynton Manor" farm where he engaged in farming. He had hardly set foot on the soil of this county before he won the respect and admiration of every one of our people with whom he came in contact. He was one of the most progressive and active farmers our county ever knew. His energy and progressiveness was indeed an inspiration. The success that he met with furnished a most healthy example to our people. He demonstrated in no uncertain way that farming pays and set an example that is well worth being followed by other farmers in the county. He was 80 years of age. He leaves surviving him a widow and eight children who are: Mesdames Joseph Harrison, of Washington, and Hughes of Va., Misses Mary and Ester Kemp, of this county, Messrs. Preston Kemp, Prince Georges county, William Kemp, West Va., J.A. and Ralph Kemp, this county. His funeral took place on Monday and interment was made in Mt. Rest Cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Beall in the Methodist Church of this town.
His pall bearers were: W.R. Linthicum, H.H. Hawkins, P.E. Sasscer, William Fergusson, A.L. Hanson, and J. Otis Watson.
