Ferdinand H. A. Block was born in Oldenburg, Germany, on Sept. 4, 1835, and died in Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, on Dec. 26, 1901. He was buried in Ida Grove (Iowa) Cemetery, 66 years old. He was a Civil War Veteran.
He came to American at age 19 to Illinois where he learned the trade of mill carpenter, then to Clinton County, Iowa, and in 1880 came to Ida County, Iowa.
At the age of 24, he enlisted in 33 Illinois Infantry for 4 years. After he was discharged, he went to Clinton County, Iowa, where in 1867 married Mary (Maggie) Welch (born 1848 in New York), lived there 15 years, came to Ida County and bought a farm in Hayes Township.
They had 5 children: Minnie Block born 1869 in Clinton County; Hattie Block born 1871 in Clinton County; Peter Block born 1874 in Clinton County; Johnnie Block born April 1882 in Hayes Township, Ida County; Carrie Nellie Block born Aug. 1884 in Hayes Twp., Ida Co.
