Mary Ellen Murphy, 85, of Still Fork Creek Road, went home to be with the Lord, Monday April 23, 2018 at Mtn. Ridge Health and Rehab in Black Mountain. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Anderson “An” and Aletha Laws Briggs and the wife of Leon Murphy who died in 1996. She was also preceded in death by sons; Dennis, Raymond and Bruce Murphy, a grandson: Raymond Murphy Jr., brothers: Edgle, Clifton and Steven Briggs, and sister-in-law: Carolyn Briggs. She was a member of Mt. Mitchell Baptist Church. Mary Ellen was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a son: Marty Murphy and wife Angie of Burnsville; 2 grandsons: Brandon Murphy and wife Ashley of Burnsville; and Eric Honeycutt of Spruce Pine; a granddaughter: Whitney McCurry and husband Dustin of Burnsville; a great grandson: Bryson Murphy and a great granddaughter: Lily McCurry; sisters: Maggie Briggs and husband Art Wilmoth, Flossie Fox and husband Edison and Barbara Ammons and husband Keith Harding all of Burnsville and Opal Shook and husband Charles of Hickory; brothers: James Briggs, L. C. Briggs and wife Sheryl and Willard Briggs and wife Joan, all of Hickory and Howard Briggs and wife Jewell and Kenneth Briggs and wife Janice, all of Burnsville and sisters-in-law: Carliss Briggs and Louise Briggs, both of Burnsville.

Funeral services will be held at 8 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Forrest Westall will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the Autrey Cemetery at South Estatoe Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
