Doris Smith, 82, of Fort Worth, formerly of Big Spring, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2018.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday, April 23, 2018 at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring, Texas, with Mark Couch officiating.

Doris was born on September 5, 1935 in Vealmoor, Texas to Willie Amon and Annie Myrtle (Bonner) Jackson.

She graduated from Knott High School in 1951.

Doris and Leonard Earl Smith were married June 5. 1951.

Doris worked for the Big Spring Police Department for 32 years, retiring in 1991.

She was a tireless volunteer for The Chalet from 2007 to January 2013.

After retiring, she and longtime companion, Rip Arthur enjoyed taking cruises whenever possible and were able to see much of the world's beauty together. She also enjoyed many fun-filled trips with her sister, Neva, including a trains, planes and automobiles European vacation. She probably still has a warrant for her arrest for speeding in Australia when she and Neva took a self-guided three week vacation.

As the symptoms of Alzheimer's increased, the lifelong resident of Howard County made the difficult decision to move to a center in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2013 to be closer to her daughter Donna King and son Kenneth Smith. She spent her last years at Westmore Senior Living in Fort Worth, Texas. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to all the thoughtful and dedicated caregivers at the memory care center at the Westmore and Vitas Hospice for their very special care. A special thanks to Marilyn Epps, memory care director and Marie Pierre, her favorite CNA and dance partner.

She is survived by daughters Donna King of Benbrook, Debra Newman and husband Fred of Del Rio; son Kenneth Smith and wife Janice of Hurst; granddaughter Denise Schoonover and husband Johnny (Blue) of Crowley; great-grandsons, Garett Wiley of Benbrook and Trevor Schoonover of Crowley; great-granddaughters Hailee Blocker of Hurst and Kristen Schoonover of Crowley; sisters, Neva Green of Katy and Karen Walls of Glen Rose and one sister-in-law: Charlotte Jackson of Andrews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Earl Smith, parents Amon and Myrtle Jackson, sister Eulene Jones, brother Darrell Jackson, and longtime companion Raymond (Rip) Arthur, and grandogs Chelsea Marie and Kimmie Kay.

During her years in assisted living and memory care, she found great joy from her grandogs and the therapy dogs that visited frequently.

In lieu of flowers please consider making donations in Doris' name to Miniature Schnauzer Rescue of North Texas www.msrnt.com/donations; DFW Cocker Spaniel Rescue www.dfwcockerrescue.org/donate.shtml, the animal rescue of your choice, or the Alzheimer's Association, alz.org.
