Mary was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 4, 1922, a daughter of Milton T. and Anna Holmquist Graff. She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in elementary education and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and elected to Mortar Board.
She fell in love with John B. Matheson, Jr., and married him on June 4, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They shared 53 years of love, laughter, tears, good food and endless home projects.
She made homemaking an art form, sewing stylish outfits, cooking delectable foods, and creating a lovely home and yard with her own tireless hands. Above all, Mary was a devoted mother supporting her children's endeavors with great pride and enthusiasm. Her face and eyes smiled at the voices of her grandchildren as they called her "Mere."
She was a devoted member of the LDS Church serving in all its auxiliaries. She loved her Heavenly Father and the Gospel.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sweetheart John, her brother Dean, her sister LaFawn, a son-in-law, several daughters-in-law, a grandchild, and a great-grandchild.
She is survived by three sons and one daughter: John B. III, Walnut Creek, CA., Marilyn "Matty" (Skip) Branch, Salt Lake City, UT, Briant (Mary Pat), Atlanta, GA, and Mark (Kristine), Highland, UT; 12 grandchildren, 16+ great-grand children; and sister Shirley Ann Graff, Salt Lake City.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Saturday, February 27, at 11 a.m. at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South. Friends and family may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the same location. Interment, Larkin Sunset Lawn.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Red Butte Garden at the University of Utah.
