NOTE: 4-18-2018...I searched Brownsville cemetery records at Linn County Historical Museum to find Sidney's final resting place and did not find her listed. She died in Brownsville and most likely is buried beside her daughters. Cemetery Records report the Fields family are buried in Block 5, Lot 20 in this order: Grave 1 to Annie, Grave 2 to Emma, Grave 3 to Hugh where there is a large obelisk, Grave 4 to Dora, Hugh's second wife. The Records report Grave 5 is empty. However Dora appears to be in Grave 5. It is evident just looking at the space beside the large Fields Obelisk that there is plenty of space for Sidney (See photo). I suspect the burials are in this order: Grave 1, Annie who has her own headstone and died first in 1863, Emma in Grave 2 died 1880 with no headstone, Hugh in Grave 3 at the obelisk and Sidney, I believe is buried in Grave 4. Second wife Dora in Grave 5. I would like to look at the original 1889 record entry for Grave 4, does it say "wife of Hugh" or "Mrs Fields" with no identifying name? Did those creating the modern record of the cemetery know that Hugh had two wives?
.....I suspect the Obelisk was placed after Emma's death. The sides of it identify daughters Annie and Emma and were obviously inscribed by the same carver. (see their memorials) Inscriptions on the front and back of the Obelisk are beautiful tributes to Annie and Emma who are mentioned by name. I wonder if Sidney (or Hugh) wrote those beautiful words. Perhaps when Hugh died, Sidney was to be added as "wife of Hugh" but never was. There was certainly room for it on the obelisk. Death and funeral notices for Sidney sadly do not tell her place of burial. I intend to visit the Brownsville Library to see if I can find more. Sidney died of Tuberculosis. Her parents are also buried at this cemetery.
.....Sidney Ann Younger, daughter of Littleton Purcell Younger and Martha Elizabeth Sampson married Hugh Fields son of Joseph Fields and Ann Currin on 18 May 1855, most likely at Brownsville. Sidney was a cousin to the infamous outlaws the Younger Gang who rode with Jesse and Frank James. Sidney and Hugh had two daughters, Annie and Emma, who preceded them in death. After Sidney's death, Hugh married second, Dora Skillman, 11 Oct 1891 in Morrow County, Eastern Oregon where Hugh kept vast herds of sheep.
