BANGOR - I, Irene Elizabeth (Shores) Murch, age 94, of Bangor, Maine, (formerly of Unity, Maine), died Friday, April 13, 2018, in Bangor. I was born on March 13, 1924, to Florence (Germon) and James Shores Sr. in Benton, Maine, and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1940 at the age of 16 having skipped several grades.

I married Carlton "Tom" Murch Sr. in 1943 and we were blessed with three children: Carlton Jr., Sheila Ann, and Richard James. We raised our family in Unity after building a house there together. I drove a school bus in Unity for five years, and then worked for the State of Maine as a clerk in the Department of Employment Security, followed by the Department of Workers Compensation, from which I retired in 1989.

While in Unity, I was an active member of the American Legion, the Church of Christ, the Grange, and TOPS.

In 1999, I left Unity and moved to Bangor, to Bangor House on Main Street. Over the course of 19 years, I headed up the tenant's association and handled the books for the in-house grocery store among other activities. I was an active member of the social community there and I treasured the friends I made.
My interests included sewing, crocheting, quilting, crafts, baking, traveling, handiwork, and coloring. I loved taking trips with family, friends, and co-workers. They were so very dear to me.

I loved them all, but my grandchildren were the light and joy of my life.

I was predeceased by my parents, Florence (Germon) and James Shores Sr.; my beloved husband, Carlton ("Tom") Murch Sr.; a half sister, Mabel (Shores) Sherwin, and three brothers, Leland, James Jr., and Douglas; sisters-in law Maxine Shores and Thelma Shores; brothers-in-law Charles Jr. ("Jim") Murch, Kenneth Murch and his wife, Ruth; also my daughter, Sheila Ann (Murch) Brooks; and our dear friends Mavor and Evelyn Clark with whom we shared many adventures.

I am survived by sons, Carlton (wife, Jackie) and Richard (wife, Carmela), and son-in-law Derrill Brooks; brothers, Wilson (wife, Martha), Lendell, Stanley (wife, Esther), and sister-in-law Dot Shores; granddaughters, Wendy Murch, Susan Murch, Karen Rand, Heather Brooks Dubord, Dianna Broad Leeman, and grandson Thomas Brooks; and great-grandsons, Nicholas and Jarrett Dubord. Survivors also include many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held upstairs at the Benton Grange Hall, 42 Kennebec River Road at 1 p.m. on April 28, with Layperson Mark Heald officiating, followed by light refreshments downstairs. Interment will be held at a later date at the Pond Cemetery in Unity.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in my name to The Pond Cemetery, in Unity.
