Enlisted at Ellicott at age 34 to serve 3 years and mustered in as a private in Co. F, 112th New York Infantry, on August 30, 1862; absent on furlough at muster out of company. Mustered out on June 13, 1865 at Raleigh, North Carolina.

He died in 1906 in the state hospital. His first wife, China Devereaux, was killed in the explosion of a steamer boat on Lake Chautauqua in 1871.

Perry Akin, a prominent Jamestown veteran, died at Gowanda, yesterday, aged 78 years. He leaves a wife and seven children. Mr. Akin came from the Akin family of Kiantone, which settled in Kiantone in 1801, being one of the first families in the southern portion of the county."

Obituary from a Boswell scrapbook, D.A.R.: "Perry Akin, well known Civil War Vet of this city {probably Jamestown} died at the Gowanda State Hospital yesterday at the age of 78. Besides his wife Clara A., he leaves five sons: D.M. of Springfield, Mass., H. of Bradford; Addis of Stedman; Lewis and Eugene of Cripple Creek, Colo. Daughters: Mrs. H. E. Douglass of Kent, Ohio and Mrs. F. Northrop of Busti. Also brothers DeWitt of Frewsburg; F. of Union City, and Marion of Marietta, Ohio."
