Funeral services will be held for Phelma E. Ott Simmons, age 87, on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Columbus Street Baptist Church, 714 Columbus St., Bakersfield, CA. Phelma passed away April 16, 2002 at the Nancy Hinds Hospice Home in Fresno. Pastor Frank Ward will officiate the services. The burial will be at the Hillcrest Memorial Park in the Garden of the Holy Family Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at the Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Phelma was born December 7, 1914 in Hot Springs County, Arkansas to Joseph and Effie (Paul) Fitzhugh. She was raised on a farm near Malvern Arkansas and came to California in 1945. She worked as a clerk for Safeway Grocery Stores where she met Thomas J. Ott, her former deceased husband. After they were married she worked in the Retail Clerks Union office with her husband for over twenty years. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Rhodes Appliance where she met her present husband, James E. Simmons.

Phelma was a member of the Caledonia Chapter #391, Order of the Eastern Star since 1959, where she held star point offices. She was a member of the La Estrella Club and the Warders Club. Phelmas love for gardening was exemplified by the beautiful flowers in her yard and her famous orange trees. She loved to bake, making delicious pies, cookies, jams and jellies. Her love and devotion to her family was her primary concern throughout her life. She always thought of others before herself.

Phelma is survived by her husband of 27 years, James E. Simmons; her two children, Thomas J. Ott, Jr. and Linda Pickett and her husband, Don; three brothers, Vernon Fitzhugh and his wife, Clara of Fayettesville, Ark., Obie Fitzhugh and his wife, Charlene of Benton, Ark., and Percy Fitzhugh of Fresno, CA; four step-daughters, Beverly Ryan and her husband, Bill Mildred Walker, Marchetta Cluck and her husband, Jim, and Joyce Ray and her husband, Dan; two grandchildren, Michael & David Pickett; nine step-grandchildren, Pamela Mahaffey, Dianne Lundy, Rick Cluck, Mona Martinez, Danny Ott, Jimmy Ott, Ted Ott, Jr., Marie Ray, and Eleanor Friele and fifteen step great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, Thomas J. Ott, Sr., her sister and brother-in-law, Eunice and Charles Vaughn, and her step-son, Ted Ott.
