Norma Jean Lind, age 86 of Purcell, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018. An up and coming musician at age six, Norma Lind now has shared her talents with others for 80 years. Norma retired from full time teaching in 1995, but that did not dampen her love and passion for music. Until recently, she served as an accompanist at Lexington Schools for over 30 years, and was the pianist at Lexington First Baptist Church. Norma was born in Anadarko to the late Oscar and Lillie Morgan. She was an only child. When she was six years-old, her aunt willed her a piano and her mother made her start taking piano lessons.
During junior high and high school, Norma played for all the vocal groups, solos and for the Rotary every week. She graduated from Anadarko High School in 1950 and attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee on a scholarship in piano. She majored in piano and organ and minored in voice and education and graduated in 1954 with a Bachelors of Music Education.
One of her childhood dreams came true when she began teaching at an elementary school in Shawnee. The music teachers second dream came true when she met the late Roy Lind at OBU. The couple were married in 1952 and Norma taught school so her husband could receive his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1956. After he graduated, they moved south of Carnegie where he pastored and she taught school. The next move was to Fort Worth, Texas, where Roy attended Southwestern Theological Seminary to pursue his Masters in Ministry. Each place the couple moved, Roy pastored and Norma taught school and played the piano or organ for her church. After Fort Worth came Hulbert, then the couple moved to Muldrow where Norma started a successful music program and band. The next stop for Lind and her husband was Verden. Norma taught school not far away in Anadarko. The Lind family loved Verden and they thought that would be their home forever but found that God opened the way for them to move to Lexington First Baptist Church. The day Roy resigned from the Verden church to accept the pastorate at Lexington First Baptist, a vocal teaching position came open in Purcell Schools. For the next 15 years, Norma taught Purcell School students and continued playing at the church. Norma was named Teacher of the Year during her tenure at Purcell Schools.
After Rev. Linds retirement from FBC Lexington, they purchased a home in Purcell. Norma continued playing the piano at Purcell High School for the choirs, and then at Lexington Schools where she played for her daughter, who teaches vocal music.
Norma is survived by her loving family, Angela Lind is the Lexington High School Vocal Music teacher and is also the worship leader at Lexington First Baptist Church. She resides in Purcell.
The Linds son, Dr. Randy Lind, is the Worship & Music Specialist for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. Dr. Linds wife, Susan, teaches in the Lexington School system. They reside in Oklahoma City.
Norma Lind has 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren: Micaela Mitchell, and husband Justin, of Edmond, OK. The Mitchells have 3 daughters: Bennett, Raegan, and Elliott Mitchell.
