The elder Stephen Woodruff was born in 1720 in Southampton, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. He was the last-born child of Nathaniel Woodruff and Abigail Leek. He was a wagonmaker. His wagons were used in the Revolutionary War. He died in 1769 in Rahway, Union Co., New Jersey.
The elder Stephen's wife, Hannah Terry Crane, was previously married to Rev. Samuel Roberson. They had anywhere from 11 to 15 children. After her first husband died Hannah married Stephen Woodruff. Their only child was Stephen, although a daughter Rachel is mentioned in one family history online.
BOOK History of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Ohio, p. 938:
Stephen Woodruff, b. 1755, married 1) Rachel Stites (1754-1794) and 2) Catherine Lyon/Lyons, 1776-1800. He moved from New Jersey to Ohio between 1800 and 1805. He was a weaver by trade, located first at Columbia township, Hamilton Co., OH, then engaged in farming on Clough Creek in Hamilton County, until his death in 1828.
He was a patriot of the Revolutionary War. Many Revolutionary War soldiers are buried in Clough Baptist Church Cemetery in Newtown (Anderson twsp) in Hamilton Co., Ohio, just east of Cincinnati. The Church was built in 1802. Today only the cemetery remains. It's in poor condition. A lot of the stones are missing, buried or damaged. Among them may be Stephen Woodruff's. It's possible he is buried somewhere on his farmland.
Stephen's daughter with his first wife Rachel was Maria Hannah Woodruff. She married George Fagin. George is buried in Clough Baptist Church Cemetery, 6941 Bridges Road.
