Rev. Rex G. Hughes 94 formerly of Jonesboro, Indiana went home to see his Lord Monday April 9, 2918 at Colonial Oaks Heathcare Center, Marion, Indiana
Rex was ordained into the ministry over 60 years ago and served faithfully as assistant pastor at Country Community Church, Jonesboro, Indiana. He retired after 26 years from the Northern Indiana VA Medical Center Marion, Indiana where he was a nursing assistant for 16 years. Prior to working at the VA he worked at Fruehauf Trailer Company, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. After his retirement he did carpentry work and became a locksmith and was owner of Rex’s Locksmith and Saw Sharping Company.
Rex was born November 1, 1923 at Huntington, Indiana to the late John F. and Pearl Mae (Gamble) Hughes. He graduated from Roanoke High School, Huntington County in 1941. He joined the Army in January 1943 and served as a medic at the 38th Field Hospital and was honorably discharged in January 1946. While in the Army he received the Bronze Star, Presidential Citation, and Pacific Medal with 3 stars.
He was a member of the Country Community Church, Jonesboro, Indiana, Jonesboro American Legion Post #95, VFW, Past President of the 38th Field Hospital Army Reunion Association and the National Locksmith Association.
Rex first married Faybelle Craig August 20, 1943, Faybelle died December 12, 2010. Rex married Betty A. Pattison Behr March 21, 1981 and she preceded him in death December 14, 2014.
Rex is survived by his children; Michael (Janice) Hughes, Upland, IN Nancy D (Shawn) Chen, Huntington, IN David C. Hughes, Zephyrhills, FL. Brenda E. (Warren) Lewis, Ft. Wayne, IN Randall L. Hughes, Marion, IN Step-daughter; Carol A. (Bob) King, Upland, IN Step-son; Gordon R. Hawkinson, Marion, IN
10 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by brothers Jack, V.T., and Bob Hughes, sisters Anna McHenry and Jean Lockwood. Step-children; Larry, Jerry, and Terry Behr and Jacqueline Smith.
A celebration of Rex’s home going will be April 14, 2018 at the Country Community Church1647 E. 600 S. Jonesboro, Indiana 46938 with Rev. Joy Cardwell officiating. Interment will be at Park Cemetery Fairmount, IN. The family will receive friends April 13, 2018 at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, College Park Chapel, 4601 S.
