Mr. Brown's obituary is the 25 March 1919 issues of both the Birmingham News and the Birmingham Age-Herald.

The obituary starts "The remains of W.S. Brown, patriot, merchant, capitalist and pioneer citizen of Birmingham ..."

And ends "Mr. Brown's death ended the career of Birmingham's oldest merchant, a former member of the Board of Alderman, school teacher, former tax assessor, and a Confederate Veteran, bearing the scars of two wounds received in battle. Have been in business here since 1876, he was one of the most widely known merchants in the county. He was 78 years old. In both his business and social life he formed a wide circle of friends in whose memory he will continue to live."
