A Conductor Is Ground To Death
Awful Fate Of B. B. Timberlake,
A Freight Conductor, At Reading, O.
Cause Of Death Is Unknown
It Is Supposed He Fell Between Two
Cars And Was Killed Instantly - Well Liked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Another name has been added to the list of those killed this year by the railroads, that of B. B. Timberlake, a freight conductor on the Richmond division of the Pennsylvania lines west, who met with an awful death last night near Cincinnati. His body was cut to pieces, bruised, and with the face crushed beyond recognition, was brought to this city, his home, last evening at five o'clock. He lived at 122 South Eighth street.
Matter Of Death Unknown - No one seems to know exactly the cause or manner of Timberlake's death, some alleging one thing and some another, and probably no one will know exactly how it occurred. He was working on a work train that came up from Cincinnati to Hamilton and took charge of a cut of cars that were being switched back to Cincinatti. When the train reached Norwood Heights it was discovered the conductor was missing, and the train put back to search for him.
Near Reading his mangled body was found stretched across the track exactly as it had lain since his death. The last seen of the man had been when he was walking along the tops of the cars. The brakeman noticed him then and no one saw him again until he was found dead. The popular supposition is that he slipped and fell between two cars and was crushed before he was noticed. The crew are certain that the train was going slowly on an even grade and so he could not have been knocked off by a sudden jar, therefore the theory given is probably the right one.
He leaves a daughter, who attends St. Mary's of the Woods, near Terre Haute. His wife has been living apart from him for several years and is now at St. Louis. Both were notified of the husband's and father's untimely death.
He Was Very Popular - B. B. Timberlake was one of the most popular conductors on the road. He was known to a large number of people and all say the same thing that he was kind, obliging, honest, good and a faithful worker. Ever ready to lighten the burden of a friend, he was liked by everyone and was looked upon as one of the best men on the railroad. A number of his friends among the railroaders were brought in and all seemed touched with grief.
B. B. Timberlake was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Timberlake, of Boston township. The parents are almost prostrated with grief. Mrs. Timberlake was notified of her husband's death and arrived from St. Louis this morning.
The deceased was a graduate of Earlham college and taught school for six years.
