George A. Umbarger, 89, of Genoa died Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Genoa Community Hospital LTC.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the Genoa United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Rood officiating. Interment will be in the Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ramaekers Patrick Funeral Chapel and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m.

George Allen Umbarger was born June 12, 1928, in Genoa to Everett and Minnie (Bussell) Umbarger. He grew up in Genoa and graduated from Genoa High School in 1945. He entered the U. S. Army and after his honorable discharge, he returned to Nebraska and graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University. On Aug. 28, 1950, George was united in marriage to Erma West in Ogallala. George taught for a while in Ogallala and St. Edward before returning to Genoa. He taught in Genoa for 32 years before retiring in 1989. Mr. Umbarger also worked for the National Weather Service in Genoa for over 50 years and also earned the Thomas Jefferson Award. He enjoyed doing lots of woodworking, volunteering at the Genoa Indian School, and searching for old Indian artifacts.

George is survived by his wife, Erma Umbarger of Genoa, son Jerry (Anne) Umbarger of Franklin, Mass.; son Stan Umbarger of Genoa, daughter Karma (Steve) Nehrig of Omaha, son Bruce (Denice) Umbarger of Pickstown, SD; grandchildren Mark (Stephanie) Umbarger, Michael Umbarger, Heather Nehrig and Jason Nehrig; great-grandchildren Stephen and Kylie Nehrig and Ryan Umbarger.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Minnie Umbarger and sister Fritz Pearson.
