Kerry Gene Austin, 74, of Atkins, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the Atkins Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born August 1, 1943, in the Bell’s Chapel Community of Atkins, son of the late Guy Gene and Coma Keener Austin.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Amos Otto Keener and wife Temperance, and Joseph Wade Austin and wife Bertha; sister, Linda Holloway; and brother, Kenneth Wayne Austin.

In 1968, Kerry married Bonnie Johnson. To this marriage they were blessed with one son, Kerry Wade Austin and his wife Laura; and two amazing grandsons who were the loves of this life, Jacob Wade Austin and Benjamin Lee Austin. He is also survived by a sister, Annette and husband Jim Lemley; and three nephews and two nieces.

Kerry and Bonnie were members of and attended Bells Chapel United Methodist Church. The church and his church family were very important to Kerry and he was saddened when his health prevented him from attending on a regular basis.

After high school, Kerry served in the Air Force. After the Air Force, he attended Petit Jean Vo-Tech and received his degree in Drafting and Surveying; going to work for the State Highway Department as the interstate was being built. He was also the Recreational Director for the city of Atkins for three years, a tank farm supervisor at the Atkins Pickle Plant, a photographer, and the pitcher and manager of the Swamp Eagles.

Kerry went on to attend Arkansas Tech and receive his Masters Degree in Mathematics. In 1981, he began teaching math in the Atkins Public School District. After a few years, he became the District Technology Director building and maintaining computers district-wide.

Kerry cherished the time he got to spend at the Coffee Shop (Joses) comparing stories of life and his many and varied occupations. He leaves behind a love of his town, church, family, and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 6, at Lemley Chapel in Atkins with Pastor Roy Beth Kelley officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert Travis, Thomas Willcutt, Brian Sweeden, Buddy Crow, Mike Sober, Tim Younger, and Ed Newman.
