She was born on April 9, 1927 in Muskegon, Michigan to James and Bessie (Simmons) Worthing. Dorothys family moved to VanMeer when she was a young girl. She attended school in VanMeer and Shingleton and then graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1946.
Dorothy married Kenneth James McPherson on July 14, 1946. While raising their boys, they began their business, Kens Sales and Services. They built the physical building in 1955 and continued to work together until Dorothy began employment at the Munising Memorial Hospital in 1975. She retired as the dietary clerk in 1989. Dorothy and Ken also worked at the Munising Bakery.
She was active in the community and a member of the Shingleton Recreation Club, Shingleton Womens Extension, and Munising Alger Sports Club. Dorothy was also involved with 4-H and the Alger County Fair. She monitored the radio with Alger Search and Rescue and worked as an official on the election board. Dorothy loved to bake and enjoyed reading, gardening, and appreciating nature and the wildlife.
She is survived by her husband of over seventy years Ken of Shingleton; sons Don (Lou) McPherson of Phoenix, AZ, Steve McPherson of Shingleton, Larry (Jeannie) McPherson of Denver, CO, and Wayne (Joan) McPherson of Sacramento, CA; their granddaughter that they raised as a daughter Shannon (Rob) McPherson-Payne of Tampa, FL; grandchildren Ashley, Afton, Brook, Steven, Neil, Nicholas, Kenny, Joey, Christian, Wendy, Emily, and Robby; 19 great-grandchildren; sister Midge St. Andrew; sisters-in-law Bunny Worthing, Sharon Keeley, and Marlene McPherson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law Diana McPherson; and brothers - Harold, Lyle, and James Worthing.
Graveside services were held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. A fellowship gathering and luncheon was held at the Shingleton Community Building following the committal services.
