Family records state that John was believed to be a cabinet maker by trade. This information verified by 1860 U. S. Federal Population Census Records.
From the diary of his brother, Dr. Linnaeus B. Anderson MD: July 9, 1880 - My brother, John McLaughlin Anderson died at "Topping Castle." He had from early infancy, hip joint and spinal disease. His hip was dislocated by inflammation and infiltration and his spine was greatly curved backwards.....He was a great sufferer all his life and probably never experienced a moment of ease, yet he was cheerful and social and was affectionate and generous. The last words he spoke to me were, "I have always loved you, my brother, with all the intensity of my nature." He was a great sufferer during the last few months of his life. He often prayed for death and God finally took him to himself gently and easily. He died without a struggle or a groan.
