MR RODERICK KILBORN.
After a long and severe illness an
old pioneer of the Rutherglen and the
North-Eastern District — Roderick
Kilborn—died at his daughter's (Mrs
Cox) residence, Elsternwick, on Sun-
day 10th, having attained the age of
89 years.
Deceased was born in Canada on
the River St Lawrence, in the year
1827 and was the third son of the
late John Kilborn, who saw active
service in the American War of 1814.
Deceased was educated in Canada and
came to Victoria in 1852 in the ship
"William Fotheringham." On arrival
he went to the Forrest Creek diggings
and subsequently visited other gold
fields in Victoria. After a time he
retired from mining and then took up
carrying. He became attached to
Cobb and Co's staff, and was one of
the drivers of the Ovens gold field
coaches to Beechworth. The young
Canadian saw more promise in the
Government service and joined the
Telegraph Department. He was post
master at Wahgunyah in 1862 and
was afterwards in charge at Ararat.
Deceased retired from the service in
1890 after 31 years service. He re-
turned to Wahgunyah and settled on
a property previously secured and
known as the Goajung Vineyard. The
property was taken up in 1860 and he
was one of the first to plant vines in
this district. The deceased was
married in 1864 to a daughter of the
late John Foord, the pioneer of the
Wahgunyah district. Deceased's wife
predeceased him, and he leaves three
sons and two daughters to mourn their
loss. After returning to the district
the late Mr Kilborn took an active
interest in local matters. He was for
a number of years a member of the
Shire Council, and for one term occu-
pied the President's Chair; he was
also president of the Vinegrowers' As-
sociation and a Justice of the Peace.
The remains of deceased will be
brought from Melbourne to-day (Tues-
day) and the funeral cortege will
leave the Wahgunyah Railway Station
at 2 o'clock. The Rev T. S. Williams
will read the burial service.
