She was also born in Norway according to information Gifford gave in the 1920 census. His father, Ole, died in 1906 in Bismarck, North Dakota.*
By 1924, he was married to Reta Sherman Sisco, and they lived in North Dakota where they had three children: Bernt in 1910, Viola in 1911, and Ronald Henry in 1912. They lived in Campbell and later Mandan, North Dakota.
By 1935 Gifford and Reta had moved to California. They lived in Santa Monica, Anaheim, and lastly Santa Ana, Orange County. In 1942 he worked as a carpenter. After Reta passed away 1958, Gifford married Elsie Pritchett, who outlived him.
