"Miss Eva” was born July 3, 1920 in Chester, MD to Howard D. Chance and Minnie Kelley Chance. She attended Stevensville High School graduating in 1937. She enjoyed a life well lived with her days revolving around her family , friends, church and her beloved Kent Island. She loved music, dancing, traveling and social events. Her beautiful smile was the outward reflection of her kind spirit and generous nature.

I lifelong Islander she worked numerous jobs at some still familiar and some long forgotten places; the Island Ferry Boats, original Fisherman’s Inn, Tidewater Bank, Stevensville Bank, Chance’s Oyster House, The Shamrock Inn and many others. She was a substitute teacher, a Sunday school teacher, piano teacher, The Methodist Church Organist for 40 plus years, a member and President of the Kent Island Heritage Society, Life Member of the Eastern Star, Member of the Queen Anne’s County Board of Elections and much more including directing the choir at the Maryland State House for more than a decade. She ran a successful tax preparation business for years touching many of the Islanders creating life long friends across generations.

She is survived by her daughter Dana Lee Thompson, son Captain James F White III USN(ret)., five grand children and five great-grand children, and was preceded in death by her son Norman Kenneth Councill Jr.

A viewing will be held Tuesday April 3, 2018 from 6-8 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newman in Chester, MD. A funeral service will be at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester, MD. At 11 AM on April 4, 2018. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to Kent Island United Methodist Church or the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department.
