J. A. Mulhern Was Found Dead

J. A. Mulhern, well known resident of this community for many years, was found dead in his home here about 9:30 Friday evening June 22nd. Mr. Mulhern, had been living alone - since the death of Mrs. Mulhern some months ago, and had been staying rather closely at home. However Friday evening when Mrs. Ross Woods came to town to go on duty as night operator at the telephone exchange she noticed a light and drawn curtains as she crossed the viaduct, and called neighbors to inquire about him.

An investigation was started by J. H. Wykert, Marshall Marvin Teeter and Coroner Dr. J. W. Pence and when the upstairs sleeping room was entered Mr. Mulhern was found dead. Apparently he had died in his sleep without a struggle. Investigation later indicated he had been dead possibly six days for the last definite record of anyone seeing him alive was on Saturday, June 16th.

His niece, Mrs. Mark Schafer at Oklahoma City and his stepson, M. O. Blair, at Anamosa were notified and the body was taken in charge by the Stacy Funeral home. It seemed advisable to have a service as soon as possible and arrangements were made that night for digging the grave, securing the casket and vault and committal service was held at the grave at six o'clock Saturday morning conducted by the Rev. E. C. Sears with Mr. Blair and a group of local friends in attendance.

James Albert Mulhern was born at Nebraska City, Nebraska, September 1, 1871.
His parents were S. B. and Margaret Allen Mulhern. He came to Columbus Junction with his parents in early childhood. Later he attended the local high school and Eastern Iowa Normal school and for a time engaged in newspaper work in Columbus Junction as well as at Clinton and Boone, Iowa. He then returned to Columbus Junction and for many years followed the trade of a painter.

He was united in marriage to Mrs. Lydia Blair of Morning Sun, October 28, 1928, at Hammond, Indiana. They returned to Columbus Junction and made this their home. Mrs. Mulhern preceded him in death February 6, 1951.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge.

He is survived by his niece, Mrs. Charlotte Schafer of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and one stepson, Merle O. Blair of Anamosa, Iowa.
