Grady L. Anderson, 84, of McAlester, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at Walnut Grove Living Center. Mr. Anderson was born May 13, 1915 in Yanush, Oklahoma to Rayson Nelson and Emeline Taylor Anderson. He attended school in Yanush and graduated from Jones Academy and the Chilocco Vocational School where he learned his trade as a printer. He worked for the McAlester News Capital from 1946 until 1970 and also the Ponca City News as a linotype operator until his retirement. Mr. Anderson joined the Oklahoma National Guard in 1934 and in 1944 was called to active duty with the U.S. Army and served in World War II as a machine gunner in the European Theater. He earned two bronze stars, a good conduct medal, the Eame Theater Ribbon and the Purple Heart during his service. He married Frances Julia West on January 12, 1940 in Konawa, Oklahoma and they moved to McAlester in May of 1946 and had lived there since that time. He was a member of the Harrison-Powers #79 American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1098, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and the Inter-tribal Council for 13 years, the Choctaw Senior Citizens Center and the Calvary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances, on November 19, 1998; two brothers, Joe Anderson and Henry Anderson, and three sisters, Pearl King, Susan Burns, and Lillian Hokit. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gary Wayne and Darlene Anderson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia "Ginger" L. and Kent Tucker of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Helen "Beth" E. and Doug Sullivan of Checotah, Oklahoma and Amy and Clint Collins of Treynor, Iowa; six grandchildren, Kim Wallace, Timi Rene Smart, Clinton DeWayne Collins, Cindi Michelle Collins, Michael Wayne Anderson, Andre LaQua Anderson, and J.D. Thompson; six great-grandchildren and a brother, Edwin Anderson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Attended Chilocco Agricultural School. Entered Army in 1944. Trained at Camp Wolters, TX. Served in Europe. Awarded GCM, ET Ribbon, 2 Battle Stars and Combat Inf. Badge. Discharged in 1945.
