Richard's mother died two weeks after giving birth to him from complications of childbirth. He was her 9th child, and after her death, the children ended up in different places. Richard was adopted by his father's brother, John Monroe Allen (23164267) and Lenora Allen (23164260). The next two oldest, twins Jessie and Eva were adopted by WC and Leta Simpson. The next oldest went to a family named Christian, and the three oldest were with their grandparents in 1940.
