ALLEN, CHARLES RAYBURN - age 74, of Lenoir City, passed away Friday, May 2, 1997, at his home. A native of Cullman, Ala., Mr. Allen served with the U.S. Army from 1940-1946 with the 84th Infantry, Artillery Division. During WW II, he fought in the European conflict culminating with the Battle of the Bulge. Upon leaving the service he relocated to Lenoir City where he and his wife, ''PeeWee,'' have remained in business since. In 1948 they went into a partnership which purchased the W.K. Freedman Store and it became All-Better's Dept. Store. Upon acquiring sole ownership in 1955 the business became Allen's, Inc., which eventually expanded into two ladies apparel stores, a men's store, children's dept. store and a shoe store. In 1984 the family liquidated the apparel businesses and opened Allen's Antiques. Mr. Allen also became supervisor with the East Tenn. Human Resource Agency. He was active in the community for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City where he was a former Deacon, Sunday School and Training Union Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent, also serving on several committees over the years. A former member of Rotary Club, American Legion, Lenoir City Chamber of Commerce, Lenoir City and Loudon County Committees of 100, each of which he served as president. Mr. Allen also served on the development committee that was instrumental in bringing Tellico Village to the county. A member of the Board of Directors, Tenn. Retail Merchants Association, 1978-1982. Formerly active in the Loudon County Democratic Party, he was an aide de camp under four governors. He was dedicated to reunions of the 84th Infantry ''Railsplitters'' Society. Preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.N. Allen; brothers, E.G. (Bill) Allen, Joseph T. Allen and Sen. Harlan G. Allen; sister, Juanita Lowery, all of Cullman, Ala. Survivors: wife, Edelphia Odelia (PeeWee) Allen; sons, Charles R. (Chip) Allen, Jr. and Joseph Dorsey Allen; grandchildren, Charles R. Allen III, Joseph D. Allen, Jr. and Allison Allen, all of Lenoir City; sisters, Wynelle Bittenger of Cullman, Alabama and Lavonia Stisher of Hartselle, Alabama; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, First Baptist Church, with Rev. Bill Wilkinson and Rev. Doug Alexander officiating. Interment Lake View Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the East Tenn. Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Continuing the Vision, First Baptist Church, Lenoir City. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Click Funeral Home, Lenoir City.
