William Otis "W. O." Blackwell, age 77, died at his home on Friday morning, March 25, 1966.

Son of the late Henry and Margaret Alverson Blackwell; husband of Josephine Thomas Blackwell.

A member of Southside Baptist Church, Spartan Masonic Lodge 70 (AFM) , and was a life member of the South Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs.

Retired Spartanburg Fire Department Chief for 24 years; a 48-year career as a fireman began February 27, 1912, when horses pulled the city's steamer fire wagons and ended January 1, 1960, when the city's equipment was brought up to the highest modern standards.

Survivors include his daughter, Margarette Blackwell Rowe (1919-1984); brothers, James R Blackwell (1883–1970) and Boyce Lee Blackwell (1903-1973); sisters, Rena Blackwell Brady (1901-1967) and Nora Blackwell Howard (1894–1979).

Also predeceased by his siblings, Evie A. Blackwell Jackson (1880–1948), John Elvin Blackwell (1884–1949), Sarah A Blackwell Watson (1888–1943), Roland Blackwell (1890-1906), Minnie Seay Blackwell Bishop (1892–1948), Melvin Earl Blackwell (1895-1950), and Lennie Byrd Blackwell Howard (1897–1960), Roy Bramlett Blackwell (1899-1947)

Members of the fire department and Fellowship Sunday School Class served as honorary escort.

Services were held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, March 27, 1966, at the J.F. Floyd Mortuary by Dr. W.H. Clapp and Rev. Fred H. Brown; burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
