Johnson A. Ewing lost both his parents at an early age. He was brought up by his uncle, John Harper, who raised him and his siblings in Farmington, Illinois. On August 18, 1868, he married Mary Sophia Stookey in Elmwood, Illinois. By 1870, Johnson and Mary were living in Nodaway County, Missouri where they raised their three children: Frank, Charles and Leslie. He passed away in Lancaster County, Nebraska in 1894 and is buried at Roca.
