Sister Rita Kartavich, RSM, died on March 8, 2018 at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse. She was in her 62nd year of religious life.
Born on March 9, 1934, in DuBois, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Bertha (Mehok) Kartavich.
On February 5, 1956, Sister Rita entered the Sisters of Mercy at St. Joseph's in Titusville, Pa. from Saint Catherine Parish, DuBois, Pa. At her reception as a religious, she received the name Sister Mary Anthony but later returned to her baptismal name. She professed her perpetual vows on July 31, 1961. In 1983, she celebrated her Silver Jubilee; in 2005, her Golden Jubilee; and in 2015, her Diamond Jubilee.
Sister Rita received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Loretta Heights College, Denver, Co. and a Master of Science in Administration from the University of Notre Dame.
Dedicated to nursing, Sister Rita spent most of her ministry years in her hometown at the DuBois Hospital/DuBois Regional Medical Center. She was a licensed Nursing Home Administrator, and became an Administrator and the Director of Outreach at DRMC. After retiring, her commitment to DRMC remained through her service on its Board of Directors.
During her nursing career, Sr. Rita left the hospital for a couple of stints to serve as the college nurse at Mercyhurst College (University) and to nurse in the Foreign Missions in Ethiopia.
Sister Rita gave a term of service to her Sisters of Mercy Community, traveling from DuBois regularly, as an elected member of the Sisters of Mercy Leadership Team in the Erie Regional Community, then in her last ministry, as a resident local leader of the Erie Sisters of Mercy at the Motherhouse.
Her religious community and several nieces and nephews survive her. In addition to her parents, her two sisters: Evelyn Simbeck and Dorothy Johnston, both of DuBois, preceded her in death.
Friends may call at the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse, 444 East Grandview Blvd. on Monday, March 12, from 2 – 4 p.m. and from 7 – 8 p.m. They may attend a vigil service there on Monday evening at 7 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be from 2 p.m. until time for the funeral Mass at 4:45 p.m. in the Sisters of Mercy Chapel. A rite of departure will take place at the Motherhouse chapel on Wednesday, March 14, at 9 a.m., to be followed by a rite of committal at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Ministry Fund.
