Sketch of the Life of Mrs. Silas German, Who Died Sunday -- Beautiful Tribute From a Friend
In the dawning of the Sabbath day, Dec. 3, 1911, the sweet, gentle spirit of Mariah German, wife of Silas German, departed to enter upon a larger life in the great beyond, aged 69 years 2 months and 22 days. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Jenkins on Center street in this city. She was born Sept. 11, 1842 near Tiffin, and was married to Silas German, May 27, 1865. Upon a farm in Groton township they spent a happy and prosperous married life.
She leaves to mourn their loss, her devoted husband, two sons, Jay and Bert, residing upon the home farm; two daughters, Mrs. A. Clemmens [sp]. of Lorain; Mrs. Chas. Jenkins, of Bellevue. A stepson and stepdaughter, Scott German of Groton township, and Mrs. Robert Waldon, of Kenosha, Wis; two brothers and one sister, Samuel Brooks, of Melmore, O., William Brooks, of Edison, O., Mrs. Rebecca Leech, of Tiffin and sixteen grandchildren. One son and one daughter passed on before Grant, who died July 6, 1906, and Ervie, Aug. 22, 1906.
When this quiet, beautiful, useful life came to a close, we said of her, she is dead. Then we hear a voice saying, "Though he were dead, yet shall he live," and "Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die, " and we are comforted in believing that she will still live on in the lives of her family and her many friends; that the atmosphere of hospitality, kindness and good will in which she lived will leave its impress upon every life that came in touch with hers. She has gone, but she has left an imperishable priceless legacy to her children, the example and influence of a well ordered, consistent christian life.
Till we meet her in the land that lies beyond the Great Divide, we needs must say, our lives are better from the life she lived and richer for the legacy she left.
Mrs. German was attacked with bronchial pneumonia while on a visit at the home of her daughter, Mrs Chas. Jenkins, about three weeks ago, and although the tenderest care was given, and the best medical skill employed, it proved unavailing to restore her health. In response to the Master's invitation, "It is enough, come up higher," her spirit took its flight. The remains were conveyed to the family home in Groton township Sabbath afternoon, where the funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 6, at one o'clock, interment in the Graves cemetery.
"We shall meet beyond the river,
By and by.
And the Darkness shall be over,
By and by.
With the tiresome journey done,
And the glorious battle won,
We shall shine forth as the sun,
By and by.
There our tears shall all cease flowing,
By and by.
And the sweetest rapture knowing,
By and by
All the best ones who have gone
To the land where strife is done,
We, with gladness, shall rejoin,
By and by."
