Robert L. Berger, 80 of Findlay, died at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at the Bridge Hospice Care Center in Findlay.
He was born on January 1, 1938 to Vaughn A. and Esther M. (Burk) Berger in Findlay, Ohio, and grew up in the home of Catherine and Gerald A. Rader. He was married to Carol A. Kifer on June 2, 1956 at College Church in Findlay and she survives.
Bob is survived by two daughters, Beth (Doug) Pritts of Dewitt, NY, and Amy (Brad) Stoller of Wexford, PA; grandchildren, Sarah Pritts and Jason Pritts of Dewitt, NY; two brothers, Roger W. (Millie) Berger of Findlay and Jerry (Nancy) Rader of Findlay; brother-in-law, Tom (Sue) Kifer of Ft. Myers, FL; sister-in-law, Cynthia (Steve) Ashton of Lorain, OH; and nephews, Jonathan Ashton, James Ashton and Nick Berger.
Bob graduated from Findlay High School in 1955 and attended the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and Findlay College concentrating on economics, marketing and statistics. He retired from Marathon Oil Company in 1992 after 38 years of service in the Economics Division. During his career, he was also involved in activities such as the National Petroleum Council and the Independent Petroleum Association of America.
In 1969, Bob, his brother Roger and a friend drove 9100 miles non-stop in 6.5 days around the perimeter of the continental U.S. in an advertising project for Marathon, Cooper and Jim Herrin Pontiac.
Bob was very active in the area music community and at church, playing trumpet and flugelhorn for many years. He played in many organizations, including the Findlay High School Band, the University of Findlay Concert Band, the Findlay Civic Concert Band, the Fostoria Community Band, Night Jazz, Saturday Night Group at church, and was a charter member of the Findlay Civic Jazz and Findlay Chamber Brass. He played in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Germany, Scotland and five countries in Europe with the Flag City USA Civic Concert Band. He played in the Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington DC in 1955. He was in the Summer Concert Band that played at Riverside Park for more than 30 years.
Bob loved cars. He owned his first car at the age of 15, a year before he could drive. He owned a total of 50 cars in his lifetime. He also obtained his private pilot’s license soon after retirement.
Bob was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Fostoria, Ohio.
Visitation for family and friends will take place from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Hope Lutheran Church, 151 W. Center St., Fostoria, Ohio. A memorial service will follow visitation starting at 11 a.m. at the church with Bob’s friend the Rev. Dr. Larry Knigga officiating.
Memorials in Bob’s honor may be made to Hope Lutheran Church or the University of Findlay Instrumental Music Department.
