The North Carolina Standard, Raleigh, N.C. 7-29-1864:
OBITUARY NOTICES.
Died, Of Typhoid fever, at his residence near Jackson, Miss. In the 54th year of his age, Mr. JNO. WILLIAMS BODDIE. He was born in the county of Nash, and on attaining manhood, he removed to Mississippi, engaged in the business of a planter, which he constantly pursued till his death. He was devoted to rural life, and surrounded himself with fine and rare specimens of the brute creation. He gave much time to reading solid and choice works, and was one of the most skilful, scientific and successful farmers in the South. He was kind to his slaves and careful of their comforts;--sincere, honorable and candid in all his relations of life.
Though leading the life of a batchelor his house for years past has been cheered by the presence of his kindred. Surrounded by every kindness which an affectionate brother and his devoted family could administer, he went down without pain to wearied nature’s long rest, and lies buried in the cemetery at Jackson.
