Our ninety-five-year-old matriarch, Unita Woodland Welch, died peacefully on February 22, 2018 in Salt Lake City. Her beloved husband, John, and devoted tribe of one hundred family members mourn her temporary absence while rejoicing at her heavenly graduation and ancestral reunions.
Nita was born in Malad, Idaho on June 27, 1922, the sixth of Blanche Hatch and Daniel Woodland's seven children. Her pioneer heritage was a guiding strength.
Nita attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, where she met her eternal sweetheart John. They married during World War II and were later sealed in the Logan Temple, recently celebrating their seventy-fifth anniversary. John and Nita have five children, Ann (Don, deceased) Pearson (Vancouver, Washington), Jack (Jeannie) Welch (Provo), Jim (Deanne) Welch (Palo Alto, California), Barbara (Lew) Cramer (Salt Lake City), and Chuck Welch (La Crescenta, California); eighteen grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The Welches raised their family in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the Los Angeles area, where Nita was a loving mother and grandmother, gracious hostess, and ward and stake Relief Society President. She exemplified learning and refined living through her passion for literature, art, travel, museums, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and service. John and Nita served a senior mission at BYU Hawaii and relished mountain time with their family on High Sierra trails and at Aspen Grove Welch Tribe reunions. As our quintessential Welch woman, Nita leaves a legacy of faith, thoughtfulness, optimism, her signature gingerbread cookies, and being busily engaged in good causes.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street. A viewing will be held that morning at the same location 9:30-10:30 and Friday, March 9, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street.
