SOL ABRAHAM DEAD

——

One of Southern Oregon's Pioneer Merchants

——

CAME TO THE STATE IN 1852

——

Began Business by Packing Goods on His Back and Making Sales to Early Settlers - Left Estate Worth $150,000.

——

Sol Abraham, of Roseburg, died from the effect of an amputation at Good Samaritan Hospital at 2 o'clock yesterday morning. He was 73 years old. From a seller of wares which he packed on his back from farm to farm in pioneer times, he became, by industry and attention to business, one of the leading merchants of Southern Oregon. He leaves an estate worth $150,000. Though prominent locally in Republican politics, Mr. Abraham was but once, in 1894, delegate to a state convention. He held but one office that of trustee of the Oregon Soldiers' Home, from 1897 to 1899.

Mr. Abraham's health began to fall after the death of his wife about four years ago. Recently gangrene set in, probably as the result of an old injury , and Thursday morning the left leg was amputated below the knee. Mr. Abraham stood the shock very well for a man of his age, but did not have the vitality to carry him through. He began sinking early Friday evening and the end came peacefully in a few hours. He was conscious to the end and recognized his children, who were gathered around his bed.

Mr. Abraham was born at Dobrzyn, Poland, January 17, 1828. He came to the United States when he was 17 or 18 years old and traded among the planters of South Carolina. Coming to Oregon in 1852, he settled at Oregon City, and began his business in a small way. Packing his goods on his back, he tramped over primitive roads and through forests and brush to make sales to the pioneer settlers. Putting part of his profits into a horse and wagon, he was enabled to cover a great deal more territory, and soon accumulated a small sized fortune. In 1853, he opened a general merchandise store at Roseburg, which had just then wrested the commercial supremacy from its rival, Winchester. Mr. Abraham had branch stores in Canyonville and continued active business until 1887. Management of his private interests occupied the last 14 years of his life. He owned the townsite of Glendale, an addition to Grants Pass, and had holdings of real estate in Roseburg and other towns, besides large tracts of timber land.

Mr. Abraham was married near Roseburg in 1861 to Miss Julia Hinkle, who died in 1897. Three children survive him. They are Mrs. J. G. Mack [Miriam Abraham Mack], wife of County Commissioner Mack, of Portland; Maurice Abraham, who is Mr. Mack's business partner, and Albert Abraham, a Roseburg lawyer. Hyman Abraham, who was a Collector of Customs at Portland in Cleveland's first administration, was a brother.

The body was sent to Roseburg for burial.

Note: March 24, 1901 article in the Oregonian identifies his birthday as January 17, 1828. Prior unattributed find-a-grave entry used March 17, 1828 as his date of birth.
