On 9 September 1952 in Camp LeJeune, NC she was born to her parents (who preceded her in death) Gene and Lucille Harvey Blankenship. Shirley developed a great affection for horses and the "cowboy" way of life as she grew up and continued that love her whole life. At 18 she was crowned "best dressed cowgirl" for the 1972 Kissimmee Valley Rodeo Championship. Shirley graduated in 1970 from Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, Florida. Soon afterwards she began working for projects and promotions for Disney World.
In the late 70's Shirley made a move to Hendersonville, NC and this is where she went to a trade school to became a certified machinist and worked at Eaton. Although she became disabled from a job injury, she found others means of employment as a dog groomer and then later working at SCC bookstore for a while, when she made her final move to Jackson County.
In spite of her diagnosis of small cell lung cancer in the spring of 2017, Shirley maintained a very positive mental attitude, committed the rest of her time to the Lord and refused to give up or give in. She spent her final days just like she wanted . . . in her own home . . . surrounded by family and friends until the good Lord called her home.
Shirley leaves behind her younger brother, Michael Gene Blankenship of Kissimmee, Fl; stepmother Jane Blankenship of Cullowhee, NC; three sisters, Cyndee (Richard) Good of Maryville, TN; Michelle (Chad) Cabe of Sylva, NC; Patricia Ann (Coy) Brown of Waynesville, NC; as well as several nieces and nephews.
