He was also the first merchant in Birdseye in 1872 and a lawyer. He was called "Lawyer Pete" at times. He served in the 44th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War and was wounded ??. He was a farmer, a Mason and a warm Republican. There is some controversy about his middle name. Many people believe that his name was Peter King Newton. His son was called Peter Rudolph Newton, Jr. as shown on his tombstone at the Birdseye Cemetery. (He was also called Little Peter). Research by descendants found him documented as Peter Rudolph King Newton.
