On March 30, 2007, at 12:53 p.m., our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, Philgrador O. Duke, was called from "labor to reward." Mother was born to the late Horace Linwood Orton Sr. and Estelle Crowell Orton Dec. 23, 1923. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Arthur Josiah Duke May 26, 1940. From this union four girls were born, Lycresia, Phyllis, Belvedere and Cassandra. Not only did she rear these girls, she became legal guardian of her niece's two daughters, Marcia and Charlene and reared them. Mother graduated from I.C. Norcom High School, attended Tidewater Community College, Norfolk State College (University), Norfolk Technical School and Virginia University. She retired from the Norfolk Naval Supply Center as a clerk after many years of dedicated service. Mother was the proud owner and administrator of Little Duke's Kiddie Care for 10 years. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Third Baptist Church for more than 25 years and held membership in several auxiliaries at the church. She is survived by four daughters, Lycresia Vernell, Belvedere D. Andrews, Cassandra Duke-Washington (John) of Portsmouth and Phyllis D. Crudup (Irving) of Hampton; grandchildren, Johnarthur, Grasaun, Shamina and Derek; great-grandson, Grasaun Jr.; sister, Dorothy Hayes of New York; legal guards, Marcia and Charlene; and a host of special nieces and nephews; other relatives, extended family and friends.
