Richard H. Abbott, “Dick,” 77, of Hartford, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at the Aurora Medical Center-Grafton, surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born to Douglas G. and Lucille E. (nee Wagner) Abbott in Hartford. He graduated from high school in Pine City, Minnesota, and served as a brother in Detroit and Fort Wayne, Indiana. He also served as an orderly part time at Hartford Memorial Hospital. In 1966, he joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1969. He was united in marriage to Mary Lynn Jo Ferstl on Oct. 16, 1971, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg. He worked for International Stamping (Midas) in Hartford, retiring after 30 years. He enjoyed gardening; watching movies, especially Turner Classic movies always with a bowl of popcorn; visiting family in Cornell, Iowa and Indiana; seeing shows at the Fireside; and taking day bus tours with Mary. He was dedicated to God, the church, and serving others. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and a lay minister; confirmation teacher for both St. Lawrence and St. Kilian Catholic Churches; an altar server; a past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 2689; Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus; member of the Third Order of Saint Francis; and a prior president of Senior Friends, Hartford.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Mary Abbott; loving children, Brian (Sara) Abbott of Cornell, James “Jim” Abbott of Hartford and Lynn (Dan) Biertzer of Hartford; cherished grandchildren, Grady and Emma Abbott of Cornell, and Evan and Lucy Biertzer of Hartford; dear siblings, Dorothy (Tom) Waddell of Grafton, Lenore Abbott of Cudahy, Douglas (Sue) Abbott of Waukesha and Dianne Abbott of Yucaipa, California; and dear siblings-in-law, Karen Ferstl of Sheboygan, Kenneth Ferstl of Denton, Texas, Kolleen Johnson of Cottage Grove, and Sue Ferstl of La Valle. He is further survived by loved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Joseph and Vera Ferstl; siblings, Donald Abbott and Tom (Delores) Abbott; and siblings-in-law, Allen Ferstl, Andrew Johnson, and Sondra Ferstl.

A Memorial Mass for Richard will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church (4886 Highway 175 Hartford, WI 53027) with the Rev. Davies Edassery officiating. Family will greet relatives and friends at the church Friday from 9:30-11:15 a.m. Following Mass, military honors will be performed.

Private inurnment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Lawrence Catholic Church are appreciated.
