Winifred (Wini) was born in San Pedro, California to Marko and Rose Perkov. Following the divorce of her parents, she and her sisters, Sophie and Mary (both now deceased), were placed in Mother Cabrini Village, a Catholic school in Burbank, California, by their father, a commercial fisherman, their legal guardian. On her father's sudden passing, they were placed with their maternal grandparents in Fresno.
A year later, her aunt and uncle, Winnie and Anton Repanich, took her to Merced to raise her and her two sisters stayed with their grandmother. She attended John Muir School and continued on to Merced Union High School, graduating with a scholarship to Fresno State. After college, she returned to Merced where she met her future husband, Alden Banks. They married in December 1948. They bought their home in 1951 on E. 22nd Street, the only original owners on the whole block.Their offspring are: David (Stephanie) in Keizer, Oregon. Douglas (Shelley) in Lodi, California. Wendy Murphy (Randall) in Merced, California. Her grandchildren include: Marissa Banks in Keizer, Oregon. Carly and Brady Banks in Lodi, California. Randi Rene Landry (Michael) in Camden, Arkansas. Sean Murphy in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Her great grandchildren include: Brooklyn Paige Landry, Logan Bryce Landry and Carson Oliver Landry all in Camden, Arkansas.Following marriage, she was employed by FAFPD (Fed) for two years. When Farmers Insurance Group moved to Merced in March 1951, she began her employment starting as a secretary in claims.Moving up, she advanced to Executive Secretary to the Regional Manager. She enjoyed her years with Farmers Insurance and actively participated in the employee's program, in particular their Profit Sharing celebrations, retiring in 1993. Following her employment, she was involved with the Friends of the Library during the time the Merced County Library was in danger of being closed. Sewing, a lifelong interest, led to the Gateway Quilting Guild.There will be a visitation held for Wini on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 3-7:00 p.m at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home located at 1490 B Street, Merced California. A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park, Merced, California. Donations to the Merced Friends of the Library or to your personal charity would be appreciated if so desired. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years.
