Marilyn Patricia "Pat" (Barrett) Applegate, 74, died on February 18, 2018. She was the daughter of Richard and Mary Barrett, of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. She grew up on a farm east of Cottonwood Falls and graduated from Chase County High School in 1961. After graduation, she moved to Fairway, Kansas and lived with her aunt and uncle while attending Draughon's Business School. In 1962, she worked for the Department of Agriculture, Commodity Exchange Authority. She was, at the time, one of only two women allowed on the trading floor at the Board of Trade. She also worked for her aunt and uncle at Air Cargo Terminals and Nelson Travel Service. In 1982, she went to work for the State of Kansas in the Benefits Office at the University of Kansas Medical Center and worked there until May of 2000. She married Evan Applegate on June 2, 1963 in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; he died on October 12, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and a nephew. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law, six grandchildren, three sisters, brother, niece, four nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
