Obituary of Maria Nugent was provided by researcher Kevin Jude. The obituary was published in the Howard Lake Paper on May 26, 1904.

The death of Maria L. Nugent occurred at her home in West Chatham, Sunday a week ago, at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Nugent, who was the mother of John C. Nugent, the noted ex-sheriff of the county, located with her husband in Chatham in 1858, coming from Massachusetts. She was one of the oldest settlers of Wright County, and could recall many incidents from her life amongest the "redskins." The funeral service was held from the old Chatham Church (St.Charles), Tuesday afternoon, and was conducted by Frs. Bonifour and Simon. The remains were laid in the cemetery beside her husband who died in 1888. Other children besides John C. are, James Nugent and Mrs. Lucy M. Smith.

On the 1900 census Maris was 77 years old, born in Ireland, and stated she arrived in the United States in 1830. She was a widow at this time and living next door to her daughter Lucy Smith. She gave her occupation as housekeeping.

The family can be located on the 1850 census in Medford, Middlesex Massachusetts. Her husband James was 35, Maria 25 and two children were listed Michael (James G.) born in 1845 in Massachusetts, John Charles age 4 born in Massachusetts. Also their was a Patrick Lamb age 21 living with the family. Possibly Maria's brother?

On February 14, 1855 their 3rd child, Lucy M. was born in Medford Middlesex, Massachusetts. On that record it stated both her parents were born in Ireland.
