Manitowoc - Fr. Richard Jeske, O.F.M., died, at 85 years of age, on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at St. Mary's Home at Felician Village in Manitowoc, WI.
Fr. Richard was born on July 20, 1932, in Cleveland, OH, to Gustav and Paula (Friedl) Jeske. He attended Our Lady of the Angels Parish and Grade School there and, after 6 years of seminary training in Westmont, IL, he was received into the Franciscans of the Sacred Heart Province (headquarters: St. Louis, MO) in 1952 and made his solemn profession in 1956. He was ordained a priest on June 24, 1959 in Teutopolis, IL.
Fr. Richard's ministry included parish work in Lincoln, NE, Dubuque, IA, Cleveland, OH and St. Louis, MO. He was a missionary in Brazil for 10 years and briefly in Zaire, Africa. He spent a short time as a chaplain in Cleveland, OH and, for 20 years, was chaplain at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, IL. Since 2014, he has lived in retirement at Blessed Giles Friary in Manitowoc, WI, with his last year at St. Mary's Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters: Paula (Joseph) Sabo, Monica (Raymond) Meyers, and Gertrude (George) Pavicic, and three brothers: Gustav, Jr (at birth), Thomas (Peggy), and Ralph (Sally). He is survived by his 34 nieces and nephews and his Franciscan brothers of the Sacred Heart Province.
The Franciscan community would like to express their deep appreciation and assurance of prayers to the staff at St. Mary's Home at the Felician Village for the care they gave to Fr. Richard during the time he resided there.
Funeral services will be held at the Blessed Angela Chapel at Felician Village on Saturday, February 17, 2018, with a visitation at 10:30 am, followed by the funeral liturgy at 11:00 am with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Manitowoc, WI.
