Obituary for Gladys Juanita Staley
Gladys Juanita Staley was born December 1, 1924 and passed way February 14, 2018.
Mother had been in Progressive Care Center in Canon City, Colorado for over 10 years as an Alzheimer’s patient.
Mother grew up in Hoehne, Colorado and graduated from Hoehne High School in 1942. Being a friend with Gladys was being a friend for life. Even though my parents divorced they were friends and we often celebrated holidays together.
I would describe mother as loving, caring, inquisitive, non-conventional but most of all adventuresome. After graduation she went to San Francisco and worked in the shipyards serving means and helped in the kitchen to pay for her room and board. Moving back to Trinidad she went to work at Triangle Chevrolet where she met Mike Gagliardi. They married and built the house I live in on Stonewall Avenue, complete with Eisenhower pink bathroom fixtures. She worked at Singer Sewing, sewing and teaching to pay for her way through Trinidad Junior College and Adams State where she received her BA and later her Masters in Guidance and Counseling.
Mother took a teaching job in Redding California. While there she decided to take me on and 8,000 mile motorcycle trip, through Glacier National Park, 4 provinces in Canada back through International Falls, Chicago and home to Redding. She later bought a Harley 74 Full Dress but had to sell it as her legs were too short and she had trouble reaching the ground.
Her teaching included Colorado, California, Arizona and New Mexico. Grandma talked her out of going to Johannesburg, South Africa; I talked her out of Samoa. She refused the contract terms of Barrow, Alaska which included building the fire, hosting traveling school board members and the building maintenance.
In the 80’s she started a new career in Real Estate on the Oregon Coast. She was involved in the promotion of several new products and even got into logging.
She loved country music and sports, especially baseball. Mother played the piano and violin. She and Phyllis would often go dancing at the Senior Centers in the area. She liked to fish but would not eat any seafood. She liked politics and was a proud Republican.
You were always a hard one to keep down which might account for the 20 plus years you spent battling Alzheimer’s. Happy travels Mom.
