Elizabeth Anne “Betty” Atkins, 86, of Hannibal, Mo., passed away at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2017, at Luther Manor Retirement & Nursing Center.
Betty was born on October 1, 1930, in Hannibal, Mo. the daughter of Frank Allan and Beatrice (Peterson) Berry.
She was united in marriage to Loren O. Atkins on September 15, 1951, in Hannibal. He preceded her in death on December 21, 2007.
Survivors include three daughters, Joan Atkins-Kavanagh (Mike) of Canton, Mo., Jeanne Bastian (Don) of Hannibal, Mo., and Susan Hibbard (Wiley) of Perry, Mo.; four grandchildren, Miki Atkins of Tempe, Arizona, Allan Atkins of Hannibal, Missouri, Anna Bastian of Columbia, Missouri, and Thomas Hibbard of Chicago, Illinois; one great grandson, Mihailo Atkins of Hannibal, Missouri; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mrs. Atkins was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Betty was a wife, mother, and homemaker, and she taught 5th and 6th grades at Central School in Hannibal for eight years. She attended Monmouth College, and she graduated from Quincy College with a teaching degree. She succeeded Loren as President of Independent’s Service Company and served until the time of her death.
Betty loved horses and instilled that love in her daughters when she bought her first horse. She ultimately became their 4-H horsemanship leader, and she rode with her daughters for most of her life. She was also a Girl Scout leader who enjoyed sailing, even taking her troop of teenage scouts (Mariners) to Kentucky Lake for a two-week camping and sailing trip. One of the highlights of that trip was visiting the great racehorse, Secretariat, in his stables.
Betty loved American antiques from the early to mid-1800’s, as well as architecture of Missouri farmhouses from that era. She spent many happy hours at sales collecting antiques and traipsing around Missouri looking at historic farm houses and barns.
Vibrant, active, and social, Betty traveled around the United States with her husband, who was a private pilot. She also traveled widely with her family and friends to countries like Germany, France, Italy, Israel, Iceland, Greece, Russia, Turkey, and all of the republics of the former Yugoslavia. Betty enjoyed playing tennis and watching her grandchildren, Allan and Anna, compete in tennis. She was an avid snow skier, water skier, and boater, and she and Loren (and friends) took numerous ski trips to Colorado and traveled extensively on the Mississippi River as far south as Mobile, Alabama.
Betty played bridge with the same bridge group for over 40 years, and she and Loren dined at the club with their friends on Friday nights for years. In later years, Betty became active in book clubs and an investment club and regularly attended the St. Louis Symphony with her friends.
Betty was a founding member of AVENUES, where she served on the board and volunteered in the shelter. She was a member of P.E.O Chapter BR and the Hannibal Woman’s Club. Betty was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and she was active in many aspects of parish life.
