He was the son of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Wilkie) Messervy. He married Annie Peoples in 1881. Thomas Messervy spent his final years in the South Carolina Confederate Soldiers Home in Columbia until his death in 1929. His wife Annie spent the remainder of her years living with their daughter, Gertrude Berthelson, in Los Angeles. Annie died in Los Angeles August 16, 1942.

From the Inscription on the stone, Elizabeth Wilkie Messervy is mother buried with her children and a son-in-law.

Kate Kerr is her daughter from her first marriage to James Kerr.

Frances Buford Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Hummell are her daughters from her second marriage to Lawrence James Messervy. Elizabeth Wilkie and Lawrence James are also Thomas Hervieu's parents.
