Longtime Lane County farmer, stockman, Roy Atterberry, 86, died Feb 23, 1994, at his home in Dighton.

He was born Oct. 20, 1907, at Breckenridge, Mo., the son of Andrew Jackson and Theresa Amelda Bennett Atterberry.

A Lane county resident since 1923, he was a farmer and stockman. He and his wife Mary lived in a rock home on the Murphy homestead for 40 years. In his earlier years he dug basements and worked road comstruction with a mule team before he started farming. Roy was very active in his community by providing his pony and surry team for many actives to give children rides. He was very involved with the Butterfield Trail and many other trail rides. He lead the Lane County Fair Parade by hauling the Grand Marshal for 22 years and was a past Grand Marshal. He also attended and participated in many draft horse sales.

Roy was a past Lane County deputy sheriff.

He was a member of the United Brethren Church of Breckenridge, Mo., the Old Time Rodeo Cowboy Association, Lane County Saddle Club, and the Kansas Western Horseman Association.

Survivors are his wife Mary, of the home; a daughter, Karen Duncan, Liberal; and a grandson, Trey Duncan, Liberal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Amzy, Phil and Emmett; two sisters, Delia Johnson and Mildred Arnold.

Funeral was at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb 26, 1994 at the Dighton United Methodist Church, Dighton.Rev. Barbara Snell presided. Eulogy was by Mile O'Brien. Music selections, "Beulah Land," "Church In The Wildwood." and "The Lord Prayer." were sung by solist, Margaret Doll accompanied by organist Edna Richards. Casket bearers were
Bill Wolfoed, Randy Whipple, Lex Bush, Bill Neely, LaVern Helzer, John Davis. Honorary casket bearers were Paul Marsteller, George Clouston, Bunch Stormont, Bob Bush, Everett Adams, Marvin Bretz. Burial was in the Dighton Memorial Cemetery, Dighton. A horse-drawn hearse was the conveyance for the services.

Memorial may be sent to the Lane County Historical Society in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.
